The shiny girls at school knew how to wear their socks folded beautifully; once, twice, head-turning elegant ankles and calves. Mine were always scrunched; half-rolled, slipping under my heel, sometimes just the one.

Continually bending down to admonish the offending sock with a quick finger yank and a sigh as I stood up and my hair had come loose and was now taking its turn to be an “affront” to a prefect.

We’re not at school any more; they do it with scarves/stoles/shawls.

And I am still unable to tame my left sock, or harness my hair or wrangle a Pashmina wrap - BA
